During this week’s financial results briefing (from which we also learned that Nintendo will be releasing NFC figurines that will be compatible between future Wii U and 3DS titles), Nintendo president Satoru Iwata revealed the first details on the company’s plans to release content on smart devices.
As Iwata emphasized in the past, Nintendo will not be releasing its own titles for mobile phones and other smart devices, but rather will be using them as a means to promote its hardware and software. The example that Iwata revealed during this week’s financials briefing is “Mario Kart TV,” a tentatively named web service that will allow users to watch videos of Mario Kart 8. Additionally, users who log into the service using their Nintendo Network ID will be able to view their rankings, watch videos that their friends have uploaded, and watch videos of tournaments in which they’ve competed without logging in from their consoles.
Below is a mock up of the service as it will appear on smartphones.
Iwata did not specify when Nintendo will be releasing the “Mario Kart TV” app, but he did state that it will be available “around the same time as the release of Mario Kart 8.”
