The Transformers franchise has fluctuated quite a bit in terms of quality over the last few entries. On the one hand, you have the Cybertron line of games from High Moon studios which were well received both critically and commercially, even while avoiding Nintendo consoles; and on the other there were the slew of games based on the movies and TV shows that didn’t fare nearly as well. With Michael Bay’s latest big screen take on the license coming to theaters on June 27, Activision is hoping to find success by blending the movie and Cybertron worlds with Transformers: Rise of the Dark Spark, which will hit store shelves on June 24.
High Moon might not be in the developer’s chair this time around– that duty has fallen to Edge of Reality– but the game will at least be coming to Wii U, so fans of robot-on-robot action have something to look forward to. However, what might prove more interesting to some is the 3DS version. Though little has been said about the handheld iteration of the game, it is being developed by WayForward, a developer with an impressive catalog for both original and licensed games to its name. Hopefully both developers will be able to live up to the expectations set by High Moon and deliver a movie tie-in that can deliver on the promise of giant robots beating each other up.
Be sure to check back for more on these robots in disguise as we approach there forthcoming launch.
