During a recent investor’s meeting, Nintendo showed off a new prototype for its NFC figurines for Wii U and 3DS.
These figurines are part of the company’s NFC Initiative, codenamed NFP (which stands for NFC Featured Platform and Nintendo Figurine Platform). They are said to be able to work between multiple titles and even across platforms, rather than being limited to a single game.
While Nintendo had previously toyed with the genre in Pokémon Rumble U, with characters like Mario headlining this, it seems like the company is looking to make a bigger push into the market, which was made popular by the Skylanders franchise.
This reveal comes after it emerged that Nintendo passed on the opportunity to partner with Activision on Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure. Is it possible that Nintendo’s own plans for toy-based games played a part in that decision?
We won’t have long to wait, as Nintendo plans to reveal more on this at E3.
