5: Pikmin 3
Now this one is interesting. The first Pikmin was abominably hard, owing in large part to the heavy restrictions placed on Olimar’s quest to recover ship parts by the arbitrarily short time limit. The second game eased off by removing the time limit, although it still had its share of punishingly tough bosses and dungeons. Pikmin 3, however, is short, simple and incredibly hard to play badly. It’s Pikmin for the Wii generation. But that’s fine– it’s beautiful, exciting, lovingly detailed and a joy to play, even if it doesn’t challenge.
The one glaring omission for me is Kirby’s Epic Yarn. Ridiculously easy to play, impossible to die, and so charming I didn’t need difficulty to keep my attention.
I remember back when Luigi’s Mansion came out, EGM thought its dual-stick control scheme wasn’t intuitive because it was odd moving with one stick and aiming the vacuum with the other. Years later CoD is the biggest franchise in the world and LM 2 would have controlled even better with a second stick. Smh…
