7: Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga
The first RPG on this list takes its place largely for its excellent humour, presentation and soundtrack, which all converge into one heck of a well put together package. If there’s one thing to be taken away from Superstar Saga, it’s how one goes about making a Mario RPG. Creative use of hammers and the plethora of buried beans with which to make stat-boosting coffee (and Nintendo in-jokes) add to the endless appeal of this game.
Thing is, there’s very little challenge in it. Short of being deliberately underlevelled or not making use of the interactive battle system, it’s rather hard to die and even if that does happen, save points are dotted all over. This is definitely a sightseeing tour rather than a test of gaming ability (with the exception of that one escort mission, which we will not speak of further).
The one glaring omission for me is Kirby’s Epic Yarn. Ridiculously easy to play, impossible to die, and so charming I didn’t need difficulty to keep my attention.
I remember back when Luigi’s Mansion came out, EGM thought its dual-stick control scheme wasn’t intuitive because it was odd moving with one stick and aiming the vacuum with the other. Years later CoD is the biggest franchise in the world and LM 2 would have controlled even better with a second stick. Smh…
