9: The Lego Movie Series
It’s hard to pick a particular title from this very broad category, but that’s of little importance when all of them fall under the category of easy but fun. It’s just endlessly amusing to blast apart endlessly spawning hordes of stormtroopers as a battle droid or fight Nazis as Short Round or run around Gotham City frying baddies with laser vision. There are always mounds of collectibles, customizable characters, and satisfying destruction physics to play with.
Sometimes games don’t need to be relevant or deep or have any sort of meaning beyond what’s happening right there on screen. Some might say that’s not enough, some might say that the LEGO games don’t challenge or engage, but some should realise that despite their valid arguments, the LEGO games are the software equivalent of bubble wrap and that is a glorious thing.
The one glaring omission for me is Kirby’s Epic Yarn. Ridiculously easy to play, impossible to die, and so charming I didn’t need difficulty to keep my attention.
I remember back when Luigi’s Mansion came out, EGM thought its dual-stick control scheme wasn’t intuitive because it was odd moving with one stick and aiming the vacuum with the other. Years later CoD is the biggest franchise in the world and LM 2 would have controlled even better with a second stick. Smh…
