5. Super Metroid
The best games to replay are ones that are short, perfectly paced, and have as little filler as possible. These are all things that describe Super Metroid, one of the most perfect gaming experiences ever crafted. The game gets you into the action as quickly as it can. No overlong cutscenes, no annoying tutorials. Just Samus Aran and Planet Zebes. With no guide, you explore. You find new weapons, tools, and armor. You defeat bosses and open new areas. Before you know it, you are facing down Mother Brain. It’s a beautiful, atmospheric experience. If you haven’t experienced this game before, I don’t know how else to convince you to check it out, so go play it! If you need a reason to go back though, go for 100 percent! Or maybe a low percent? Try beating the game with as few items as possible. SNES copies of this classic are getting a little pricey, so grab it on the Wii U VC if you don’t feel like shelling out the big bucks.
Fantastic list and write-ups Sam. I find myself coming back to most of these as well. My personal list would include Super Castlevania IV as well (score another for the SNES!) Like you said, “sadly, there isn’t enough time to replay everything.” Happy Gaming!
Never feel bad about telling people to play Ocarina of Time =) Dawn of Sorrow gave me a chuckle, because every time I see the box art of that game, it makes me think of Konami’s re-release of it. The cover for the re-release was… an image of the original box. Hahaha. That game is freaking awesome, though. All three of the DS Castlevania’s are out of this world. Wonderful list.
