8. Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island

I know I just talked about this game’s predecessor, but to be honest, the titles and the fantastic platforming experiences within are just about all the two Mario World games have in common. This time around, Yoshi does things a little differently, with a bigger moveset (including his signature flutter jump) and the ability to use eggs as projectiles. The levels are bigger and packed full of tons of collectibles. Although there isn’t a massive overworld map, the variety of challenge in the levels is just as strong, especially if you make a point of grabbing the collectibles. If you run through as fast as possible you can finish this game in one or two playthroughs, but I encourage you to go for 100 percent and unlock the extra stages in each world. You can get this one on SNES, but it is a little pricey. Luckily, you can pick it up on the Wii U VC for cheap, and you might already have it on your 3DS if you were part of the Ambassador Program.

Fantastic list and write-ups Sam. I find myself coming back to most of these as well. My personal list would include Super Castlevania IV as well (score another for the SNES!) Like you said, “sadly, there isn’t enough time to replay everything.” Happy Gaming!

Never feel bad about telling people to play Ocarina of Time =) Dawn of Sorrow gave me a chuckle, because every time I see the box art of that game, it makes me think of Konami’s re-release of it. The cover for the re-release was… an image of the original box. Hahaha. That game is freaking awesome, though. All three of the DS Castlevania’s are out of this world. Wonderful list.
