Nintendo President Satoru Iwata had some people curious when he missed this year’s E3, but it became clear this week why, when he revealed that he had to undergo surgery to remove a growth in his bile duct. Doctors wanted to be cautious and get rid of the growth now, in case it turned into something nasty in the longterm. As a result, Iwata’s been spending some personal time recovering, and he won’t be attending an upcoming shareholders meeting.

Iwata seems to be in good spirits, stating that the operation was a success and that he “came through it well.” Though he’s been maintaining a light work schedule via email, it will be a little while before he can resume his normal, daily routine. It’s lucky that Iwata’s doctors were able to detect the growth early, as issues in the bile duct can be difficult to treat in more advanced stages. As one would expect, Iwata and his surgeons took care of the problem quite… directly.

Nintendojo hopes that Iwata’s recovery continues to be smooth. Feel free to send him well wishes in the comments below!
