Italian developer MixedBag has announced that forma.8 is coming to the Wii U eShop in the third quarter of 2014. The title features a small exploration probe named forma.8 that has been stranded on a volatile world. While there, forma.8 will have to dig deep below the planet’s surface for a mysterious energy source. The player will start with nothing other than the ability to float around the planet, but, as the game progresses, forma.8 will find new power-ups that will allow further exploration. MixedBag has stated that forma.8 is its take on the “Metroidvania” style game, but the graphics also seem a bit reminiscent of Retro’s “silhouette levels” from Donkey Kong Country Returns and Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze. Our readers can judge for themselves by watching the trailer, embedded below.

In the accompanying press release, Mauro Fanelli, co-founder of MixedBag, had this to say about the upcoming title:

“I’m so excited to finally reveal forma.8 for consoles, mobile, tablets and computers. I think it’s amazing that the first game announced for a next-generation console from an Italian team is an indie project made by an indie team. It wouldn’t have been possible just a few years ago. A massive thanks to Sony and Nintendo for the support, and to Unity for making it possible.”
