During Thursday’s Nintendo Direct broadcast, Nintendo aired some brief footage from Monolith’s anticipated Wii U project, tentatively dubbed X. The footage gave fans a closer look at the game’s battle system, which is strikingly reminiscent of the one employed by the studio’s Wii opus, Xenoblade Chronicles, except with “even more polish” according to X director, Tetsuya Takahashi.

Following the broadcast, Nintendo also released a handful of beautiful new screenshots of X, highlighting the same battle scene shown off during the Nintendo Direct. You can check them out below.

What do you think of the new screenshots? As always, we’d love to see your thoughts in the comments!

These look great! From the video, battle seems just as described, a juiced-up and polished version of Xenoblade’s. It really looks like multiplayer is going to happen; is it too much to hope that perhaps two players could cooperate locally? :^)

The other hope-it-happens-this-way I’ve got for X is that the English translation is done in the UK again. Squeaky, way-too-excited Japanese characters and dialog, as interpreted by collected, disciplined British writers and actors brings it down just the right number of notches. It was refreshing to go through a JRPG without the voice acting’s enthusiasm levels being over NINE THOUSAND. ;^)

Anybody got a hypothesis of what those interlocking gears are about? Looks to me like it’s either the central badass power for somebody, the way activating the Monado was for Shulk, or maybe more like the triple-tech, chain-attack, everybody-work-together command.

Looks like it gets replaced with mech powers or something when you’re suited-up, which makes sense, but doesn’t help me figure out what the symbol or the pair of numbers actually mean. :^)

      …or next year, or whenever.

I have very little faith in anyone outside of Japan seeing this game in 2014. Would be thrilled to be wrong, but until an actual release date is announced I’m not holding my breath.

No argument about the “most anticipated” part though! This is going to be fantastic.
