Last summer, Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto told IGN that the company would begin experimenting with free-to-play software, citing a new Steel Diver game as one of its first releases. During today’s Nintendo Direct broadcast, that new Steel Diver game was finally unveiled to the public as Steel Diver: Sub Wars, and it’s available to download right now in the 3DS eShop!
Unlike the deliberate side-scrolling exploration of the original Steel Diver, Sub Wars is an action-oriented first-person game. The title places a much greater emphasis on multiplayer than its predecessor, offering a hectic four-on-four team battle mode that can be played both locally and online. Sub Wars also features a single-player campaign, which contains seven missions to complete.
Those curious about Steel Diver: Sub Wars can download a free trial of the game, which offers two submarine types to choose from and a small sampling of the single-player mission mode. More missions and submarines can be unlocked by upgrading to the full version of the game. Both versions also feature Sub Wars’ entire multiplayer mode, allowing anyone who downloads the title to engage in undersea battles.
