A strong showing for the blue blur doesn’t help Sega meet its financial goals.

With the recent announcement of Sonic Boom, focus has started to shift away from last year’s Sonic Lost World. However, Sega’s recent financial briefing brought the game back into the spotlight, as the company divulged sales information for the 3DS and Wii U titles. It appears that the games performed fairly well, with a combined 640,000 units sold thus far. Unfortunately, it didn’t help enough as Sega underperformed in comparison to last year’s third quarter units sold. The company shifted 6.31 million physical games during the time frame, versus last year’s third quarter tally of 6.94 million.

Sega attributed a harsh market environment to its overall lower sales returns, though reviews more than likely didn’t help in Lost World‘s case. While the title received good reviews from the Nintendojo staff, other websites and magazines appeared torn on what to make of Sonic’s latest adventure. Since then, the Wii U version has seen a couple of improvements. The addition of free, Nintendo-centric downloadable content and patches to help the game’s overall stability may help lead to stronger word-of-mouth, particularly if the rumored Zelda-themed stage turns out to be true. As for Sonic Boom, it will have the added benefit of a much stronger multimedia push, including a television series. Perhaps that will help give Sega get a bit more of a boost in the sales department.
