During the Nintendo Direct today, Nintendo confirmed that Little Mac is the next character to join the fray in Super Smash Bros. on Wii U and 3DS.

Little Mac is the 23rd confirmed fighter so far and originates from the popular Punch-Out!! series.

Shown off in a new trailer for the game, his attacks are primarily boxing-related. He also gains a power meter that seems to serve as his Final Smash attack.

Little Mac’s power meter has me really curious – might other characters have their own additional UI elements as well? Perhaps Megaman has limited amounts of his various weapons. Maybe Link has a magic meter (or his new universal purple meter from Link Between Worlds). Maybe Pikachu can’t spam his thunder attacks forever or he’ll run out of PP. Extra life for Mario if he beats 100 coins out of opponents.

Ooh! PED suit energy tank injection a la Prime 3 for Samus! :^)

The character reveal trailers have been fantastic. I was pretty shocked that it wasn’t a Donkey Kong character. Sakurai knows how to build hype for sure.

After seeing some of his moves in action, I’m really looking forward to a Little Mac vs. Captain Falcon match. They seem like they could be really well matched (barring changes to Captain Falcon’s moveset).
