The companies that collectively own the Pokémon franchise have collectively filed a trademark for something called “Phantom’s Gate,” raising speculation that it may be a new installment in the series. According to Siliconera, the trademark was filed in December 2013.

Any likelihood of the game being connected with Pokémon comes from the fact that Nintendo, Game Freak, and Creatures Inc. all own one third of the Pokémon series, and any collaboration of the three on copyright issues would logically relate to it.

The most recent game in the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon series bore the subtitle of Gates to Infinity, and the next game (if indeed that is what the trademark is) could well follow the same theme in terms of naming.

While this trademark goes unexplained, though, it’s advisable to remain pretty skeptical. A good deal of trademarks are filed for projects that are never completed.
