Near the end of its Digital Event this morning, Nintendo took the time to introduce an all new IP, a competitive online third-person shooter called Splatoon. In Splatoon, two teams of four battle to control territory on a large map. But instead of capturing points or bases, teams hold territory by spraying it with paint guns. Players battle to spray as much of their paint on the map as they can, and whichever team has covered more of the map by the end is the winner. Based on the trailer, there are plenty of ways to cover the ground quickly, including bombs and a giant paint roller. You can also dispatch enemy players using weapons like paint snipers and rocket launchers.
Another interesting feature is the ability to turn into a squid and swim in your paint. By doing this you can move much faster, allowing you to quickly get back into the fray. However, stepping on enemy paint slows you down. You can view the whole map on the GamePad, allowing you to see at all times what areas are already covered and which are empty.
Splatoon will release sometime in 2015.
