When Mario Kart 8 rolls into Wii Us this May, it will be bringing along more robust item customization than ever before. Game director Kosuke Yabuki revealed that while Mario Kart 7 opened the door to the idea, 8 will take it a step further with a much deeper level of item tweaking.
No specifics were given about which mode(s) would feature the new item customization, but Yabuki made it clear that players will, to some capacity, be able to turn on and off which items they do or don’t want to see. As an interesting aside, he even went so far as to acknowledge that there is some dissent amongst the Mario Kart community when it comes to the Blue Shell, but insisted that it really, truly was designed to promote game balance. All this writer knows is that come May 30, the Blue Shell switch will finally, mercifully be switched-to off.
What other features do you hope make their way to Mario Kart 8? Any characters you’re still holding out hope for? Let us know below!

Even Double Dash had the option to just have items such as the green shell and bananas on, but this seems like a much deeper level of customization.
Now we’re just waiting on that track editor, right? (I wish!)
The blue shell wasn’t originally that bad when it stayed on the ground and knocked out everyone on its way to first place. This at least gave the person in back a chance to catch up. When that sucker became airborne and only went after first place it became way too cheap! All it does is screw the player out of first place.
