Today’s Smash Bros. Direct was certainly filled with a lot of information about the upcoming games, but perhaps the biggest surprise was saved for the end of the broadcast, when Charizard and Greninja were announced as the two newest additions to the roster!
Smash fans will remember that Charizard appeared in the series’ Wii installment, Super Smash Bros. Brawl, as one of three Pokémon under the control of the Pokémon Trainer. This time, however, the Fire-type will be fighting on its own, and will even Mega Evolve into Mega Charizard X for its Final Smash.
It won’t be the only starter Pokémon making its roster debut, however, as it’s joined by Greninja, the Water/Dark-type from Pokémon X and Y. Like in those titles, Greninja will be able to wield water like a weapon, and could even be seen throwing Water Shurikens at its opponents.
Are you excited to see more Pokémon join the Smash Bros. roster? Will you be playing as either when the games launch? Let us know in the comments!

That IS Greninja’s tongue wrapped around him, right? Ew. Still, can’t wait to play as him! Charizard, too.
Greninja is unexpected but seeing him in action is quite exciting! And Charizard is awesome.
This reminds me I need to get back to playing Pokemon Y (got caught up playing Layton and the Azran Legacy lately).
I expected Pokemon Trainer to have a revised roster. This is pretty dang cool, instead. Greninja is awesome.
