1) Harvest Moon 64
Released: 1999
Plant crops, raise livestock, find a wife. If that sounds like life, think again: in Harvest Moon 64, that’s the recipe for sweet, addictive gameplay. Why completing what amount to chores in the real world translates to gaming gold in Harvest Moon is a mystery for the ages, but it works. Harvest Moon 64 was only the second game in the series, but it took everything about the SNES original and distilled it into something even better. It was next to impossible to put the controller down after starting up Harvest Moon 64, with players devoting hours to improving their farms and advancing the game’s underlying plot points. It remains the pinnacle of the series, one that Natsume has to find a way to bring back to its fans. Harvest Moon 64 is the best non-Nintendo-made game on N64.
