Hugo Smits, the Dutchman behind Tappingo studio Goodbye Galaxy Games, has unveiled the rapid prototype game creation tool he’s been working on for 3DS: Gomba. Yes, with only one O; it’s the Hungarian word for mushroom.
Gomba will provide you with a game engine, level editor, simulator, scripting language, and debugger. “It’s super easy in use,” Smits writes. “Non-programmers can probably create a simple game in just a[n] hour. While advanced programmers can go nuts with the C-like script.” Gomba is currently in development for Windows, but Smits has plans to make it an online Flash-based program you can simply access in your Internet browser.
The tile-based engine isn’t suited for all genres, but it’s user-friendly and looks perfect for adventure and puzzle games. Nintendo has been reaching out to indie studios lately, and Gomba could be an essential step towards making 3DS game development accessible to millions more people, even those of us without programming backgrounds. You can check out more on Gomba and Hugo Smits in general at Goodbye Galaxy Games’ blog.
