This morning’s Nintendo Direct was mainly about Nintendo 3DS, but there were a few Wii U announcements thrown into the mix.
Pikmin 3 finally got a release date of August 4, and EarthBound is finally hitting the Virtual Console on Wii U.
We also got some more news about Super Luigi U, the upcoming DLC for New Super Mario Bros. U which will star the more debonair of the brothers, Luigi. The game will feature a ton of new content, as outlined in Nintendo’s press release:
“Wii U owners who purchase this downloadable content for New Super Mario Bros. U (a copy of the game is required) will get 82 updated stages and a new adventure featuring Luigi, who can jump higher than Mario, yet has trouble stopping after a dash. Many stages start with only 100 seconds on the timer, and quicker stages are populated with many obstacles. New Super Luigi U is scheduled to be released this summer during the Year of Luigi.”
The new system update for Wii U is scheduled to roll out next week, and this video above from Nintendo shows how dramatically the loading speeds will be improved. The update will also add a feature that lets user boot the system into Wii mode by pressing B while powering on the Wii U console.
Nintendo also said that shortly after the system update, we can expect the eShop to be updated with a formal Virtual Console and the new Wii U Panorama View app. Wii owners who transferred Virtual Console games from Wii will be able to re-purchase those games with added Wii U features for a very reduced price.
The release date of Game & Wario was also announced. The game will be coming to Wii U retail and eShop this summer on June 23.
