2) Champion’s Road (Super Mario 3D World)
Warning: Spoiler ahead for those not done with the game!
Super Mario 3D World is a tough game in its latter half, but as I zipped along past the end and beyond, I knew Nintendo had something venomous lying in wait. Sure enough, the very last stage of the game is this, the second-most ingenious menagerie of platforming challenges I’ve ever experienced in a Super Mario game. Champion’s Road is a flowing, incredible battery of last-second jumps and flips that makes even the most grizzled, jaded gamer take pause. The joy the designers must have felt as they brought so many different elements from the game into this one, final trial is felt through every moment of the stage. Is it easy? No, because it’s not meant to be. Champion’s Road is about the player putting all their skills on display to make a single, uninterrupted run that would be the equivalent of a perfect performance in the New York City Ballet company. Except, in a Tanooki Suit.
Having only recently started Super Mario Galaxy 2, I don’t know how you can choose. Every level in this game feels so brilliant and original and purely entertaining… it’s literally a joy to play.
