5) Superstar Road-5 – Spinning Platforms of Doom (New Super Mario Bros. U)

The sheer masochism of certain Super Mario stages is unbelievable at times. Less-skilled players often don’t make it past the first or second level of a Mario game, but have fun nonetheless. For the pros, though, the real thrill is when a Mario title starts beating you into the ground with brutally unforgiving courses to maneuver through. Case in point, Spinning Platforms of Doom, a sadistic mixture of moving, rotating platforms that hover over deathtraps, all while being encircled by a ring of Boos. Crazy! The pandemonium of both trying to survive and collect all three Star Coins is maddening at times, but the sense of satisfaction in walking away unscathed is hard to beat.

Having only recently started Super Mario Galaxy 2, I don’t know how you can choose. Every level in this game feels so brilliant and original and purely entertaining… it’s literally a joy to play.
