9) Mario Zone-1 (Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins)
Mario Zone itself is one of the more surreal setting in any Mario game, as all its stages take place inside of a giant, toy robot replica of the plumber himself. The first stage is a hectic trip across gears, avoiding enemies, and slowly floating down between spikes to reach the goal. Using the Bunny Ears to navigate Mario at the end of the stage is one of the trickier challenges with that power-up, and very satisfying if the player managed to snag all the coins. Super Mario Land 2 was the last, original Mario platformer on a handheld for years until New Super Mario Bros. hit DS years later. It’s a shame, as Nintendo really nailed the feel of the 2D platformers with this game; it would have been fun to experience more stages like this.
Having only recently started Super Mario Galaxy 2, I don’t know how you can choose. Every level in this game feels so brilliant and original and purely entertaining… it’s literally a joy to play.
