10) World 1-1 (Super Mario Bros.)
The level that started it all is a fitting place to begin our list. As an introduction to both the game and the basic template of Mario gameplay, world 1-1 is a work of game design brilliance. While Super Mario Bros. wouldn’t be the last time Nintendo would use this trick, players learned the rules of the game simply by playing it. Millions of people inched Mario forward, learning to hit blocks, avoid Goombas, and eat mushrooms, all with Koji Kondo’s timeless, catchy music in the background. While ultimately a very simple stage to complete, 1-1 rooted Mario and everything he represented into the minds of players everywhere.
Having only recently started Super Mario Galaxy 2, I don’t know how you can choose. Every level in this game feels so brilliant and original and purely entertaining… it’s literally a joy to play.
