8. Toki Tori

Developer: Two Tribes
Released: Game Boy Color (2001)

Similar to Renegade Kid, developer Two Tribes had done all the heavy lifting to craft Toki Tori, it just needed a publisher to give the game a shot. In the brick-and-mortar-focused days of 2001, digital distribution just wasn’t practical, so without a financial backer to peddle out cartridges and boxes, the game would be doomed. Two Tribes searched high and low until Capcom was finally willing to give Toki Tori its moment in the spotlight. A 2D puzzler/platformer, the eponymous Toki Tori spent each stage using a suite of tools to retrieve eggs scattered about the landscape. The tools could only be used a certain number of times, so players were challenged to determine the most efficient use of each.

Toki Tori oozed charm, and its gameplay was a breath of fresh air when it released (and still is, frankly). The mixture of platforming and tricky puzzles proved to be a brilliant combination. While the game, sadly, didn’t break any sales records, it was lauded by critics and players, alike. It’s since been enhanced with 3D visuals and re-released on just about every platform under the sun, so if you don’t feel like hunting down the old Game Boy Color cart, be sure to give it a download on Wii U!
