10. Retro City Rampage

Developer: Brian Provinciano
Released: WiiWare (2013), 3DS eShop (2014)

What started as an attempt to recreate Grand Theft Auto III for NES eventually blossomed into this potent love letter to classic NES games and ’80s pop culture. Brian Provinciano meticulously crafted Retro City Rampage, which took him years to develop. While it saw release across a multitude of consoles and services, Provinciano was adamant that it come to WiiWare (and eventually the 3DS eShop).

It’s amazing how many references to classic games, movies, and TV shows are packed into the title; spotting them all is half the fun! Though meant to emulate GTA III, Retro is more similar to Grand Theft Auto I and II, with gameplay taking place from a top-down perspective. There are a ton of missions and content in the game, and despite its 8-bit visual and musical aesthetic, Retro is every bit as ambitious as a modern sandbox game. Not bad for one guy with a dream!
