This week we’re talking about indie games, so let’s kick off with a Track of the Week from the father of modern independent video games, Cave Story. The game came out in 2004 as a freeware PC title, and quickly grew in popularity. It hearkened back to retro game classics, and it was created by just one person– Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya, who programmed, composed music, and created artwork. The title went on to be improved, and found its first commercial release on WiiWare several years later.
This track, called Mischievous Robot, plays during Quote’s first visit to the Egg Corridor to rescue Sue. It’s really the first time in the game that the difficulty ramps up and you get the sense that you’re in for a big adventure. The upbeat and incredibly catchy music goes along with it well.
Cave Story arguably laid the foundation for much of the indie games we play today. Before 2004, very few games made by small teams could go head-to-head with AAA titles with multimillion budgets. With one great game, Pixel paved the way for a change in the video game marketplace. Today, we have tons of awesome indie games we can enjoy on Nintendo consoles and other platforms!
