During a special third party-focused Nintendo Direct broadcast earlier today in Japan, Square Enix unveiled more footage and details of its upcoming 3DS game, Final Fantasy Explorers.
Like the Crystal Chronicles subseries, Final Fantasy Explorers eschews the turn-based combat of traditional Final Fantasy games for more action-oriented gameplay. Players will be able to customize their avatars with a suite of weapons and armor, and will need to team up with other explorers to take on Bahamut and other familiar Final Fantasy monsters.
Final Fantasy Explorers will be launching in Japan this winter. An international release has yet to be announced.

I was ready to think Final Fantasy should pass the torch to Bravely Default, but I’m pretty intrigued by this. I thought Crystal Chronicles on GameCube was genius, so I’ll have to keep an eye on Explorers.
It had better come out somewhere other than Japan! I thought that would be a no-brainer, but the baffling and complete lack of Dragon Quest X localizations makes me worry.
DQX’s trouble might stem from fear that non-Japanese gamers wouldn’t pay a monthly fee for a console RPG. Is there any hint that this would be a subscription title? I would expect not, but Square Enix has been unpredictable lately.
