4. Mutant Mudds
Developer: Renegade Kid
Released: 3DS eShop (2012), Wii U eShop (2013)
It’s weird, right? The same developer that made Moon and Dementium is also responsible for the bright, cheery Mutant Mudds. Renegade Kid earned its stripes with those two gritty DS titles, but when the time came to transition from DS to 3DS, it was still a small-time developer looking to land a real hit. Mutant Mudds, a 2D shooter/platformer, would prove to be the proverbial strike of lightning that Renegade was hoping for. The soothing pixelated art style and catchy soundtrack perfectly complemented the tight gameplay, making Mutant Mudds a winner with players.
Mutant Mudds is also significant in that it proved how viable a platform the 3DS eShop could be for getting an indie game out to players. DSiWare certainly had its successes, but what 3DS has been doing far exceeds what that initial endeavor ever achieved. Nintendo owes some of that success to titles like Mutant Mudds, which brought a lot of people around to the service. Meanwhile, Renegade Kid showed that it was more than able to dabble in a variety of genres, and has earned a lot of trust and recognition from fans as a result. Now, bring on Treasurenauts, already!
Couldn’t agree more with number 2. It’s great! Just started playing Guacamelee! Great stuff :)
