3. MotoHeroz

Developer: RedLynx
Released: WiiWare (2011)

Now here’s something people don’t see everyday– a 2D stunt racer! RedLynx, the studio behind Trials, developed and published this title independently for Nintendo’s WiiWare service. Holding the Wii Remote sideways, players could propel their vehicle either forwards or backwards, blasting through wicked turns and adjusting the machine’s balance to make a smooth landing. Gameplay was incredibly intuitive and polished, evoking the same sort of fun that the best Nintendo games are known for. Which was no accident; RedLynx specifically wanted to recreate some of that Nintendo magic when making the game!

RedLynx also deserves some credit for not going the retro route with MotoHeroz. That’s not to say there’s anything wrong with pixels, but it’s a path well-walked by many indie devs, so it was (and remains) refreshing to see a game that stands on its own two legs, aesthetically. MotoHeroz also made some waves with a decent amount of online connectivity and content that was uncommon for a WiiWare game. Overall, it’s one of the most polished titles on this list and still worth a download today.
