Sega has announced that it will be releasing a 3D version of Sonic the Hedgehog in Japan next week.
Like Nintendo’s own 3D Classics series, Sonic the Hedgehog will retain the general look and feel of the original Genesis game, but will feature stereoscopic 3D effects and a couple of gameplay tweaks (like the addition of the Spin Dash). The game will be released in the 3DS eShop on May 15, and will retail for 600 Yen.
Sega has previously released two other “3D classics” of its own in Japan– Super Hang-on and Space Harrier— neither of which have made their way outside the country. Considering that the Sonic series carries much more weight than either of those two titles, could we finally see it coming to the US eShop? We certainly hope so!

Nice! I enjoy the 3D-ified retro games, and would love to have Sonic among them.
Same here. I love the way retro games like Kirby’s Adventure look in 3D, so I’d really like to see Sonic make it over here.
If this comes out in the US I’d be there day 1.
