Donkey Kong Country Returns 01

The 3DS release calendar is already looking pretty full, with Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, and Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate all hitting the system within the next two weeks (not to mention LEGO City Undercover: The Chase Begins arriving in April), but it looks like we can now add another game to the list of upcoming releases: Nintendo has announced that Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D will be coming to the handheld on May 24.

Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D is a 3DS port of Retro Studios’ excellent Wii platformer, which was released for the console back in November, 2010. We learned last week that the port is being handled by Monster Games, the developer behind Excitebots and Pilotwings Resort.

Have you already played the Wii version of Donkey Kong Country Returns? Will you be picking up the 3DS version when it hits stores later this year? Let us know in the comments!

When DKCR was announced, for a moment I actually thought it _was_ a 3DS game (the 3DS was announced the same day, if I remember right). I was actually a little bit disappointed that it was for Wii; having to shake the wiimote to perform certain actions struck me as a very poor fit for a precision platformer, and I never did buy it.

I assume waggle is out for the 3DS version, and the preview video looks fantastic, so I think I’m going to grab it.

If nothing else, here’s hoping some extra sales will lead to a DKC2 on Wii U, with gorgeous 1080p visuals and underwater levels! :^)
