Indie developer Yacht Club Games, the new studio founded by Sean Velasco and other WayForward alumni, took to Kickstarter to announce its debut title Shovel Knight, an 8-bit side-scroller in the vein of Mega Man and Castlevania. While the project is currently planned for PC, Yacht Club has stated that it hopes to bring the game to 3DS and Wii U soon after, provided it is able to accrue the funds needed to begin development.
Like other 8-bit side-scrollers, Shovel Knight tasks players with jumping their way through a series of themed levels in search of an abduced maiden. The game follows the eponymous Shovel Knight, a small knight who brandishes a shovel instead of a sword, as he journeys across the land battling the Order of No Quarter (the Shovel Knight equivalent of Mega Man’s Robot Masters). Yacht Club has done its best to replicate the visual style of the era, adhering to the same color palette found in other NES titles, but with a few modern touches (like scrolling backgrounds) to give the game a greater visual flair.
Yacht Club is hoping to release Shovel Knight this September. At the time of writing, the studio is close to achieving a quarter of its $75,000 goal, with just under a month remaining in its Kickstarter campaign (which, along with more information on the title, can be found here).
What do you think of Shovel Knight? Do you plan on backing the game? Let us know in the comments!

I plan on backing this as soon as they announce that the possibility of a digital download on a system I own. I hope that the coverage I’ve seen on Nintendo sites, and the response of their readers, will convince Yacht Club to commit to other platforms now, rather than raise money only for a PC version and then port later if it becomes viable.
Well, it looks like we have confirmation that Yacht Club is serious about bringing the game to 3DS/Wii U. How’s that? :P
