The mystery is finally over: according to the Australian OFLC, Donkey Kong Country Returns 3D, the upcoming 3DS port of Retro Studios’ seminal Wii platformer, is being developed by Monster Games (the studio behind Excitebots and Pilotwings Resort).
Monster is certainly an interesting choice for this kind of project; most fans had assumed that the port was being handled by NST, while Monster is generally known for producing racing games and the like, which are a far cry from side-scrolling platformers. Still, it’s heartening to see that Nintendo is serious about strengthening its relationships with smaller developers. With two of the Big N’s IPs now under its belt, could we be seeing another defunct franchise (like, say, Wave Race) entrusted to the studio in the near future?
