Nintendo president Satoru Iwata kicked off today’s Nintendo Direct broadcast with a ton of new information regarding add-on content for the Wii U and 3DS versions of Super Smash Bros. Foremost, Iwata gave fans their first look at the returning Mewtwo, who was confirmed to be the games’ first (and presumably only) downloadable fighter. According to Iwata, the Mewtwo DLC will be launching later this month on April 28. Fans who’d like to purchase Mewtwo in either the 3DS or Wii U game can do so for $3.99, or can download him in both titles for a discounted $4.99. Those who have registered both versions on Club Nintendo, however, will receive a free download code for him on April 15, nearly two weeks ahead of his public release.
It turns out Mewtwo won’t be the only downloadable fighter coming to Super Smash Bros., either. During the broadcast, Iwata revealed that Brawl veteran and Mother 3 protagonist Lucas will also be released as add-on content for the titles. Unfortunately, Lucas is still in the midst of development, but Iwata confirmed that he will be available to download this June.
Coinciding with Mewtwo’s release, a handful of new outfits will also be available to download for Mii Fighters. Unlike previous Mii costumes, these outfits will be drawn from a variety of different gaming series’, including the Legend of Zelda and Mega Man. Below is the initial wave of add-on costumes:
- SSB T-Shirt: $0.75 for each version, $1.15 for both
- Link Cap and Outfit (Swordfighter class): $0.75 for each version, $1.15 for both
- Majora’s Mask (headgear only): $0.75 for each version, $1.15 for both
- X’s Helment and Armor (Gunner class): $0.75 for each version, $1.15 for both
- Proto Man’s Helmet and Armor (Gunner class): $0.75 for each version, $1.15 for both
- Dunban Wig and Outfit (Swordfighter class): $0.75 for each version, $1.15 for both
- Cat Hat and Suit (Brawler class only): $0.75 for each version, $1.15 for both
- Monkey Hat and Suit (Swordfighter class): $0.75 for each version, $1.15 for both
- Mii Fighter Costume Bundle: $6.00 for each version, $9.20 for both
Given the sheer demand for additional fighters, Nintendo also announced that it is opening up a “fighter ballot” on the official Smash Bros. website. Using the ballot, players can vote for which new character they’d like to see added to Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS. Of course, not every suggestion will be realized, but Iwata says the team will give careful consideration to each vote, so go to the ballot and vote for Isaac from Golden Sun (or any other character you’d like to see join the brawl)!
Are you excited to see Mewtwo and Lucas coming to Super Smash Bros.? Which character will you be voting for in the fighter ballot? Let us know in the comments!

I’m going to steal a phrase I saw on Miiverse and say #KrocTheVote for King K. Rool. I wonder how receptive Sakurai was to this idea initially.
