6) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past
Released: SNES (1991)
While The Legend of Zelda broke new ground in the video game industry, Nintendo wasn’t content with simply cobbling together a couple of new dungeons and slapping a number two on the box for the game’s sequel. The company instead created a radically different experience for Zelda II, and as a result, the gap between the original Zelda and A Link to the Past felt very long indeed. Returning to the style of play that landed the series on the map, A Link to the Past took everything about the first game and made it better– by a factor of ten. From the graphics (the rain knocked people’s socks off, back in the day) to the game’s rousing Light and Dark Worlds switching, A Link to the Past set the standard for many of the Zelda conventions that remain to this day. Few titles are as meticulously crafted as A Link to the Past, and it will forever be a watershed moment in the video game industry.
Nice list, and it had to be pretty tough to rank so many beloved gems! I’d put Link’s Awakening higher and Minish Cap lower (maybe even kick it off the list and include the Oracle duo) but everything here is solid.
Spirit Tracks remains the one Zelda title I haven’t finished. Every time I pick it up, I’m quickly turned off by the central Tower of Tedium. If the otherwise fun and memorable Phantom Hourglass hadn’t had a similar Basement of Boredom, I’d have tried to squeeze it into a top ten.
Cool list.
I hope yall dont mind me saying mine hehe…
