9) The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening
Released: Game Boy (1993)
There were plenty of doubters prior to the release of Link’s Awakening. Game Boy, which wasn’t the most powerful of consoles, seemed like a strange fit for a series know for its sprawling overworlds and intricate quests. Any fears were quickly cast aside once players finally got their hands on the series’ first portable installment. Link’s Awakening was a true Zelda game through and through, and even offered a potent story with a truly wicked twist at the end. Capcom would go on to build upon the foundation laid by Link’s Awakening with its Oracle of Ages and Seasons games, but neither title came close to trumping this original. The game was re-released on Game Boy Color as Link’s Awakening DX, offering updated colored graphics and a new dungeon to conquer. Both versions remain excellent handheld Zelda experiences.
Nice list, and it had to be pretty tough to rank so many beloved gems! I’d put Link’s Awakening higher and Minish Cap lower (maybe even kick it off the list and include the Oracle duo) but everything here is solid.
Spirit Tracks remains the one Zelda title I haven’t finished. Every time I pick it up, I’m quickly turned off by the central Tower of Tedium. If the otherwise fun and memorable Phantom Hourglass hadn’t had a similar Basement of Boredom, I’d have tried to squeeze it into a top ten.
Cool list.
I hope yall dont mind me saying mine hehe…
