Super Smash Bros. producer Masahiro Sakurai revealed in an interview with Nintendo Life the depth of effort which goes into creating characters for the fighting game series. Mr. Sakurai went into the details of character design, and said the following:
“I get the planning for each character done remarkably quickly. For example, after learning about Greninja and its abilities one evening, by late night I had already completed the design for that character’s moves and features. The process, however, of actually creating a character often takes well over a year, where we are constantly working on the model, the animations, the audio and the balancing.”
The development time for characters may go some way to explaining the long development time between installments. Super Smash Bros. Brawl saw release six years after the series’ previous installment, Melee, and this time the gap will be almost the same.
Super Smash Bros. releases on 3DS on Friday, October 3.
