While we may still be waiting for N64 and GameCube games to come to the Wii U eShop, Nintendo announced its plans to release a handful of Wii games on the digital service.
This month, Wii U owners will be able to download a trio of Wii classics from the Wii U eShop: Super Mario Galaxy 2, Punch-Out!!, and Metroid Prime Trilogy. Galaxy 2 is currently available on the service, while Punch-Out!! and Metroid Prime Trilogy will follow on January 22 and 29, respectively. Games that originally supported the Wii Classic Controller can now be played using the Wii U GamePad.
All three of the initial Wii titles can be downloaded for half price for a week following their launch. Nintendo promises that more Wii games will be coming to the Wii U eShop in the near future.
Will you be downloading any of the announced Wii games on your Wii U? What Wii games are you hoping to see re-released on the eShop? Let us know in the comments!

This was my favorite news of the direct. I’ll be getting the Prime Trilogy on day 1.
Still, I’ll be honest. I was holding my breath near the end for news for more about wii classic controller games being able to be used on the gamepad. Doesn’t that mean the all the games on the Wii U should be easier to move over to the eShop now??
Because I own a large number of Wii games, this doesn’t benefit me very much…
But (especially as some retail Wii games are becoming less easy to find in the wild) this seems like a fantastic idea to help flesh out the Wii U release schedule. The $10 promotional pricing for games like Metroid Prime Trilogy and Super Mario Galaxy is also incredible value.
I’m buying Metroid Prime Trilogy at that price, for convenience and to prevent wear-and-tear on my disc.
