Nintendo’s previous free-to-play endeavors on 3DS have been fun, quirky titles, but now the company is expanding the controversial pay model to its uncannily popular Pokémon franchise. Pokémon Shuffle is a free-to-play puzzle game that will be launching on the 3DS eShop this coming February.
Similar to Pokémon Battle Trozei, Shuffle features match-three gameplay with an emphasis on completing battles as quickly as possible. As with other micro-transaction titles, Shuffle limits gameplay duration, making players choose between waiting for playtime to build back up, or paying for more playtime through the eShop. It’s a perilous line to walk, but Nintendo’s approach to DLC hasn’t been completely conventional in the past, so we’ll just have to wait and see Shuffle in action.
