2013 might have been the Year of Luigi, but 2014 may very well be the “Year of Rosalina”– not only did the intergalactic princess star in the recently released Super Mario 3D World as a fifth playable character, she’ll be making an appearance in two major titles next year, including the upcoming Super Smash Bros. games for Wii U and 3DS!
Rosalina was officially confirmed for Nintendo’s mascot bralwer during today’s Nintendo Direct broadcast. Unlike her Mushroom Kingdom counterpart, she’ll be joined by a Luma helper, which appears can attack independently of the princess. Rosalina will also use her special star wand to lift and throw other characters, as well as issue commands to her Luma. You can see some footage of the pair in action below:
Rosalina’s confirmation brings the current Smash roster up to 19 characters. We imagine that number will only continue to grow before the games are released sometime next year.
Will you be trying Rosalina out in the new Smash Bros. games? Let us know in the comments!

Oh, man! That reveal was just fantastic! During the Direct, Sakurai definitely had me faked out that Kirby might be joining Mario Kart.
I’ve been really happy with all of the newcomer reveals so far, actually. This intro video was particularly beautiful.
Seeing Kirby on a Mario Kart race track just makes me wish more and more for a Nintendo Kart game.
