In an apparent good sign for the 3DS, sales figures indicate that Super Mario 3D Land is currently outselling Super Mario Galaxy in its first year. 13 months into the title’s shelf life, the game has sold 8 million copies, beating out Super Mario Galaxy‘s 7.66 million copies sold in its first 13 months.

While sales figures show that the two games sold very similar numbers in their first two months here in the U.S., it appears that Super Mario 3D Land‘s Japanese sales have been much stronger than those of Super Mario Galaxy. One possible reason for this is that Japanese gamers tend to favor 2D platforming games over 3D. While Galaxy was a full-on 3D title, 3D Land blended together 2D and 3D platforming elements.

While these sales figures do look very good, it’s important to keep in mind that Super Mario 3D Land still has a ways to go to beat Super Mario Galaxy‘s overall sales. The title’s total number of copies sold reached nearly 11 million last March.
