Making a Mario game is hard work. Since the character first debuted, his titles have set a standard for quality that is nearly unmatched in the video game industry. Unfortunately, that quality is the result of a massive amount of hard work and effort. So much so that Shigeru Miyamoto, the character’s creator, says he plans on taking a break from the series once Super Mario 3D World arrives on store shelves later this month.
Speaking with French gaming website Gamekult, Miyamoto said he’d like to start focusing on smaller games in the future. “Creating a Mario of 3D World’s calibre demands enormous energy and there is little chance that I’d be able to take the time necessary to work on the next Mario,” said Miyamoto. “Instead, I want to get involved more heavily in the development of new, smaller-scale projects, but that doesn’t necessarily mean just modest downloadable titles. It’s not impossible that I’ll present a new game as principal creator in the future, but even though I’m not directly in charge of a project, I’m always keeping an eye on what the teams are doing in terms of gameplay and I have confidence in them.”
It’s important to note that Miyamoto’s role in the last few Mario installments has been a smaller one. The legendary developer has played more of an advisory role as his position at Nintendo has expanded. Considering that the last few Mario titles were games like New Super Mario Bros. U and Super Mario Galaxy 2, it’s safe to assume that the series is in more than capable hands. In fact, Miyamoto probably summarized it best when he concluded “Don’t worry about Mario!”

Sad, but not totally unexpected. There will be a day when Miyamoto isn’t making ANY games, so we might as well brace ourselves little by little, I suppose…
