If you’re a Nintendo fan, it’s hard to think of November without thinking of new consoles. For the past three generations, Nintendo has launched each of its home consoles during the month of November, and the company usually reserves its biggest releases for the week of Thanksgiving (as we discussed during last week’s installment of this feature). Now that we’re in the midst of what is traditionally “new console month,” we’ll be devoting this week’s issue to console launches, starting with a tune from one of my favorite launch titles:
While most Zelda fans consider the GameCube release of The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess to be the definitive version of that particular adventure, for me, the game is emblematic of Wii. Not only was it the most ambitious of Wii’s launch titles, it was also one of the grandest installments in its series, taking players on a lengthy journey through the most fully realized version of Hyrule to date.
And it all began with this theme. From the moment you boot the game up and hear the elegiac melody above, while Link and Epona trod across the dusty plains of Hyrule, it’s clear that players are in store for a moving adventure. While its place among the series’ best entries may be debatable, there’s no denying that Twilight Princess was one of the most beautiful and engaging games of its time, especially during the early months of Wii’s life cycle, and its title theme helped set the tone for the journey ahead.
