Readers with a long memory might remember the announcement of Rodea the Sky Soldier, a colorful action/flying game from Sonic creator Yuji Naka, all the way back in early 2011. The title was in development for Wii and 3DS and set to be published in Japan by Kadokawa Games but fell silent for a very long period of time. Kadokawa did confirm that Naka’s studio, Prope, was still working on the game last year, and that transitioning the gameplay to the 3DS from the Wii version. Nothing more was said of the game, until now.
The latest issue of Famitsu in Japan has several pages on the, which is now being developed for 3DS and Wii U. It turns out the original Wii version of the game was actually finished back in 2011, but was never released as the 3DS version was being reworked. Rather than completely scrapping that version, though, it will bundled in with the Wii U game during its initial release in spring of next year.
Whether the game will see release in North America remains to be seen, though it does seem that might have been the original intent in 2011 as Kadokawa did file a trademark for the title at the time and it still remains active. Hopefully plans for Rodea outside of Japan will be made clear in the near future.
In the meantime, check out the original trailer for the game below:
