One of the cooler features in the upcoming Super Smash Bros. for Wii U is the promise of GameCube controller functionality via a special adapter. Though the door seemed open for other games on Wii U to take advantage of the new peripheral, sadly Nintendo has clarified that the adapter will only work for Smash Bros. and no other Wii U or Wii software. Certainly not the end of the world, but it does seem strange to create something with so many potential uses and instead limit it to a single game.
In any event, the device will work with both original GameCube controllers (including WaveBirds!) and new ones. Individually, the adapter will sell for $19.99, while new Smash Bros. logo-emblazoned GameCube controllers will retail for $29.99. A great value option will be available in the form of a bundle featuring a copy of Smash Bros., the adapter, and a GameCube controller for $99.99.

Well, that’s quite a disappointment. I was planning to transfer my Wii data over to the Wii U once the GC adapter came out, but alas, Brawl and Project M will remain on the Wii.
Seen online a lot of people are upset by this. I enjoyed the GameCube controller but the impact the controller made still amazes me. I remember when it was unveiled and people online hated on it so much. Glad once again Nintendo showed they knew what they were doing.
I can’t imagine this thing wouldn’t work on Wii games that already use the GCN controller, or VC stuff on Wii mode. That seems really peculiar. Well, worst case scenario, I’m glad I kept my third party GCN controller adapter!
