Game Freak has said it once before, and we’re hearing it again. Paid DLC and Pokémon just don’t jive, the series art director Ken Sugimori said in a recent interview. “Part of the Pokemon worldview is catching and holding the creatures in players’ pockets. The way players obtain and hold Pokemon must remain consistent from game to game,” explained Suigmori. “[Paid DLC is] one of things that could ruin the worldview of Pokemon.”
Sugimori said that Game Freak would never sell a Pokémon unless they truly felt it was worth buying. They give away legendary Pokémon in events so everyone can share in the fun. However, paying for Pokémon with real currency isn’t completely off the table; Sugimori indicated that in the future they might sell Pokémon if the developers came up with a way to make it “fun.”
Of course… does a franchise that regularly comes out with multiple versions of games necessarily need DLC at all? Incremental improvements are usually made in new versions, which cost full price. Doing that is better for profits than releasing content packs, I would imagine.
