Now that it’s first Wii U title has hit store shelves, it looks like Retro Studios is hard at work on a new project, though as you’d expect, the developer wouldn’t say just what it is.
Speaking to GameSpot, Retro Studios president Michael Kelbaugh confirmed that the studio had begun work on a new title after it wrapped up development on Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze last November. When pressed on what the game is, however, Kelbaugh vaguely said,
“We love working with Donkey Kong. It’s a great character. It’s a lot of fun. We love working with Metroid Prime, with Mario Kart; those are fun, fun games to work on. So, you know, you can’t lose. Every one of those IPs have been a lot of fun to play with and work on and [we’d] love to come back to them sometime.”
Just last fall, Nintendo designer Shigeru Miyamoto stated that Retro was a definite candidate to develop a future Metroid title. While it would certainly be exciting to see the studio return to the Metroid universe, Kelbaugh’s comments are much too vague to offer any hint as to what it is currently working on.
In the same interview, Kelbaugh also praised the Wii U hardware, calling it “a powerhouse”:
“Unfortunately, the perception is that it’s not a very powerful machine. That’s just not true. It’s a powerhouse. It’s more than adequate to make great games on.”
What do you think the studio’s next project could be? Are you hoping it’ll be a new Metroid Prime title, or would you rather see the developer create an entirely new property? Share your thoughts with us in the comments!
