When Nintendo president Satoru Iwata first announced Nintendo’s desire to release new products focused on improving quality of life, fans wondered exactly what that could entail. This weekend, the company revealed the first part of that initiative, a device intended to monitor sleep patterns without any need to wear obtrusive attachments. The project is a collaboration with ResMed, a company with experience in the treatment of sleep disorders.
At this point, details are minimal. The sensor device works when placed next to the user’s bed. ResMed’s S+ device already works in a similar fashion, so it’s easy to assume that Nintendo will build off that technology and support it through the use of new software.
While the concept seems odd, the success of titles like Brain Age and Wii Fit have proven that there is a market for products that seek to improve quality of life. Perhaps this could be the next big thing along those same lines. Given that sleep and fatigue play an integral role in the workout process, Nintendo may even seek to combine the device’s data with Wii Fit‘s own readings for more detailed conclusions in regards to health. There are certainly some interesting possibilities, at the very least.
